Mapping Your Way Through the Action

It might seem contradictory to use Google Maps or Apple Maps for fiction. But the imaginary element of fiction frequently isn’t the location. It is typically the content of the location, the characters, or the plot. Even for fantasy, the actual locations found with an earthly map can add an aura of reality to a fictional location based on those actual locations.

This article shows writers how to use online maps to add structure and substance to their fiction. It includes a sidebar on how to use Google Maps.

Note to Future Self

We thought our trip to Europe would be memorable. Little did we know. This excerpt from the book, Our Easy Expedition, covers one day in September 2001 when Kathryn, her cousin Debbie, and I were stranded in London.

This memoir covers 11 September 2001, when we learned about the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center during our stay in London. After traveling to the continent and taking a road trip from Edinburgh to London, we went to The Cabinet War Rooms (where Winston Churchill oversaw Britain’s efforts during World War II), Westminster Abbey, and Buckingham Palace, including the Royal Mews. Following sightseeing, we happened on a pub playing video of the attacks on their television screens. This story is formatted as a time capsule.
